The DVLA collects driver data (on behalf of the Secretary of State) under Part III of the Road Traffic Act 1988 (RTA) for the statutory purpose of licensing drivers. The RTA does not contain a provision for the disclosure of driver data Before data is shared with an outside body the DVLA must be satisfied that there is a lawful basis for doing so.
